Abstract The interview with Anita Pipes took place at the Grande Ronde Retrement Residence in La Grande, where she lives with her husband, Robert. (She refers to him as Roby.) At age 86, Anita is trim of figure, physically active (e.g., regular walking and pool playing), and alert mentally (e.g., she does frequent Internet searches and e-mailing).

The interviewer was Eugene Smith, Executive Director of the Union County, Oregon History Project. He completed a one-hour interview on June 11, 2003.
